Living in Puerto Rico: veteran travel and relocation guide

Overview

Puerto Rico is a US territory, which makes it the lowest-friction overseas move a veteran can make. Your VA benefits, SSDI, Medicare, and military retirement all continue without modification, and you keep voting rights at the federal level the same way you would from any state.

Monthly budget estimates

Single-adult planning estimates in USD: lean $1900, comfortable $2900, premium $4500. Costs vary by city and circumstances. Obtain current rental and insurance quotes.

Visas and legal residence

US territory. No visa, no passport, no residency application. Move with your existing US ID.

Healthcare

Mix of private and public hospitals with a strong English-speaking presence. Many physicians US-trained. Medicare and Tricare both work.

VA healthcare abroad

San Juan VA Medical Center is a full Level 1b VA facility. Community-based outpatient clinics in Mayagüez, Ponce, Arecibo, Guayama, Comerío, and St. Croix and St. Thomas (USVI). Telehealth works natively. This is the only relocation option with full in-territory VA care.

Safety and lifestyle

Tourist and expat areas (Dorado, Rincón, Condado, Old San Juan) are generally safe. Use normal urban awareness in inner San Juan and Bayamón after dark. Beach lifestyle, Spanish-Caribbean culture, year-round warm weather. Hurricane season runs June through November.

Who should research this destination?
