Use the existing Freedom Abroad country explorer and calculator to compare a shortlist. Those cost estimates are planning inputs, not rent quotes or immigration advice. Visit the neighborhoods you would actually live in, preferably outside peak tourist season. Separate a vacation budget from a relocation budget. Deposits, visa fees, shipping, insurance, exchange fees, and emergency travel can make the first months much more expensive than a typical monthly estimate.
Check VA's guidance for veterans living overseas and any applicable payment restrictions before changing residence. SSDI, SSI, military retirement, and VA compensation are different programs and should not be treated as interchangeable income sources. VA's Foreign Medical Program can cover qualifying care for service-connected conditions and certain related care abroad. It is not comprehensive international health insurance. Review enrollment, covered conditions, claims, and provider arrangements directly with VA. Arrange coverage for unrelated illnesses, emergencies, medications, and evacuation when needed. Do not assume Medicare or a domestic plan provides routine overseas coverage.
Confirm entry, residency, income documentation, dependents, and renewal requirements with the destination's consulate. A tourist stay is not permission to live or work there indefinitely. Review tax filing, banking access, direct deposit, phone-based authentication, mail, and prescriptions. Consult qualified professionals for your personal immigration or tax circumstances. Keep a return fund, copies of essential documents, and a trusted contact. VCC Travel members can generate a relocation-oriented planning worksheet; the existing country explorer and budget tools remain available under their current access rules.
