MWR access, VHICs, and getting through the gate

What expanded access means

Expanded access effective January 2020 includes qualifying veterans with a documented service-connected disability, Purple Heart recipients, former prisoners of war, and approved primary family caregivers. A 0% service-connected rating is different from having no service-connected rating. Covered retail MWR activities can include recreational lodging, campgrounds, marinas, golf, bowling, restaurants, equipment rental, and American Forces Travel. The change does not provide general access to fitness centers, indoor pools, education programs, or child development programs.

Bring the right documents

A Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) showing Service Connected, Purple Heart, or Former POW is commonly used for expanded access. VHICs are issued to veterans enrolled in VA health care. A state veteran designation is not interchangeable with a VHIC for every program. Some programs accept additional VA documentation with a passport or other qualifying ID. Caregivers need their current eligibility documentation. Ask the installation and lodging provider exactly which combination they accept. Call the visitor control center before your first trip. Ask about background checks, registration, vehicle documents, guest access, and operating hours. Do not arrive after hours assuming that a lodging confirmation opens the gate.

Book with the property

Ask whether your patron category can book now, whether active duty has priority, and whether your stay is space-available. A general eligibility rule does not override a property's booking window. Confirm the total rate, cancellation deadline, accessibility, pets, and maximum stay in writing. Online exchange shopping is a separate benefit available to honorably discharged veterans and is not proof of lodging eligibility.
