Space-A flights: who can fly and how to prepare

Start with eligibility, not a flight schedule

Space-A is a way for eligible travelers to use surplus seats on military aircraft. It is not an airline booking system, and it is not a benefit available to every veteran. Non-retired veterans with a permanent service-connected disability rated as total generally travel in Category VI. Their routes are limited to travel within the continental United States (CONUS), or directly between CONUS and Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and U.S. territories. A 100% rating by itself is not the same as permanent and total status. Eligible dependents must accompany the veteran. Military retirees generally have Category VI worldwide options, subject to their documentation and current travel rules. Reserve, dependent, survivor, active-duty, and other categories have different requirements. Consult AMC rather than assuming this veteran-focused summary covers every category.

A practical first-trip checklist

Read the current AMC eligibility categories, then contact both the departure and intended return terminals. Confirm that every leg is authorized for your category, what documents you need, and how to sign up. Sign up using the terminal's accepted process. Selection depends on category and sign-up time. Monitor the official terminal page for roll call instructions and the latest schedule. A posted flight or a tentative seat count is not a reservation. Carry your required identification and eligibility documentation, medications in carry-on baggage, suitable clothing, and enough funds for a commercial ticket and extra lodging. Ask about baggage, meals, accessibility needs, and check-in rules before you travel.

Plan a return you can afford

Mission needs can change departure times, routes, and seat counts without notice. Do not build a trip around a nonrefundable connection, medical appointment, or fixed return deadline unless you can fund an alternative. VCC does not currently operate a live departures board or seat-alert service. Use the official AMC terminal directory for current information. We do not scrape Facebook or promise seats.
