100% VA Disability Benefits Explained (2026 Guide)

A 100% VA disability rating provides $3,737.85 per month in tax-free compensation in 2026, equivalent to earning over $50,000 per year in a taxable job. This guide covers every benefit available at the 100% rating level.

Monthly Compensation at 100%

The base rate for a single veteran with no dependents is $3,737.85 per month. With a spouse, the rate increases to approximately $4,168 per month. Each child adds roughly $103 per month. A spouse requiring Aid and Attendance adds more. All VA disability compensation is federal tax-free and most states also exempt it from state income tax.

Healthcare Benefits

Veterans rated at 100% receive Priority Group 1 enrollment at the VA. This includes comprehensive medical care with zero copays for all conditions, both service-connected and non-service-connected. Full dental care is included. The Foreign Medical Program provides coverage when traveling or living abroad. No enrollment fees or premiums apply.

Education Benefits for Family (Chapter 35)

Dependents of veterans rated 100% Permanent and Total qualify for Chapter 35 DEA benefits. This provides up to 36 months of education assistance for spouses and children. Benefits can be used for college degrees, vocational training, certification programs, and apprenticeships. The current monthly stipend for full-time students varies by program type.

CHAMPVA Healthcare for Dependents

Spouses and children of veterans rated 100% P&T who are not eligible for TRICARE qualify for CHAMPVA. This civilian health program covers medical, surgical, mental health, and prescription medications. Annual out-of-pocket costs are capped and there is no premium. CHAMPVA covers most services including specialty care, emergency services, and prescriptions.

Property Tax and State Benefits

Most states offer property tax exemptions for veterans rated 100% disabled. Many states provide full exemptions, meaning zero property tax on a primary residence. Additional state benefits may include vehicle registration fee waivers, hunting and fishing license exemptions, free state park passes, and reduced higher education tuition for the veteran and dependents.

Additional Benefits at 100%

Commissary and exchange access for shopping on military installations. Space-Available travel on military aircraft. Vocational rehabilitation through VR&E (Chapter 31). Automobile adaptive equipment grants. Special Housing Adaptation grants. Veterans with dependents may qualify for additional Special Monthly Compensation categories.
